5 Reasons Why Pregnancy Is Beautiful

As women, weโ€™re all different, but through those differences, our pregnancies are a beautiful gift from God. In the midst of it all, from conception to birth, there is something remarkable about an expectant mother.

Today there is so much talk about a woman’s bodily autonomy. In particular, what a woman should do with her body if she finds herself pregnant. There are so many who can’t even identify what I woman is, identify when life begins, or even acknowledge that an unborn child is a living child.

The life of an unborn child is mocked and thought of as nothing but a clump of cells. As a Christian woman and mother, I have to defend my biblical worldview and write in opposition to that false ideology.

The beauty of pregnancy is real. There IS beauty in life. There IS beauty in giving birth to a child.

I remember when I was 36 weeks pregnant with our 3rd baby and went to a routine doctorโ€™s appointment, I waddled ever so slowly into the exam room. I had the most wonderful conversation with the nurse checking me in. She was the nicest, sweetest woman. But there was something she said at the end of our conversation that resonated with me.

She complimented that I looked radiant and beautiful pregnant and she then went on to say that she was so โ€œuglyโ€ when she was pregnant. I was honestly taken aback by that statement because she was a very beautiful woman. When I looked at her, I could only imagine how radiant she probably looked when she was pregnant.

After I left my doctorโ€™s appointment, I couldnโ€™t stop thinking about that statement. Why didnโ€™t that woman feel like she was beautiful when she was pregnant and how many other women feel that same exact way?

Trust me when I say that I get it. Pregnancy isnโ€™t always the most glamorous thing. I know mamas whoโ€™ve had blissful pregnancies from start to finish. And I know others whoโ€™ve had rough pregnancies from start to finish. Iโ€™d say with all three of my pregnancies (depending on what trimester), I fell somewhere in between but more on the latter. 

Bottom line…I get it!

But despite all of that, the beauty of pregnancy is incredible. 

Here are 5 reasons why:

1. Pregnancy Is A Gift From God

God Almighty is the author of life and He created us in His image and for His glory. God created the family and He cares deeply about how children are treated, raised, and nurtured. Children are a blessing, not an inconvenience, and certainly not a burden. Even on the hardest of days, having children is a gift from God.

Psalm 127:3-4

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth.

2. Pregnancy Is A Miracle

Mothers are baby-growing machines! God created us to carry life within us and that precious baby inside your womb needs your growing belly for 40+/- weeks to develop. Life is a miracle from God and your womb is an integral part of that miracle. Children are the most vulnerable among us and they need our protection from the very beginning of life, which is conception. 

Psalm 139:13-14

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

3. Pregnancy Reflects A Mother’s Love

In the second trimester when you first feel your sweet baby move inside your tummy, or when you first saw that sweet baby on the ultrasound, did it put a smile on your face? It definitely put a smile on mine!

All of the little movements, twirls, tumbles, Braxton hicks, sore bones, labor pains, etc that you feel when you’re pregnant help you grow more in love with your baby and are just a precious reminder that there is life inside of you! Or what about all the nesting that you do in preparation for your sweet baby? Itโ€™s our maternal instinct.

The Bible often compares a mother’s love for her child to God’s love for His people. A mother’s love runs deep and that’s beautiful.

Isiah 66:13

As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

4. Pregnancy Is A Marathon

It takes a lot of HARD WORK to grow a baby! Thatโ€™s 9 plus months of intense struggles and blissful joy. We endure crazy bodily functions, morning sickness, mood swings, constipation, trouble walking, constantly needing to pee, swelling, sleepless nights, weight gain, trouble having sex with your husband, and even pregnancy-induced hives. I can go on!

Oh, and let’s not forget the hours of labor and delivery. It takes a lot of strength and endurance to be pregnant and deliver a child but women were built for this and God created us uniquely special for this. Delivery, whether you decide to have a vaginal birth or have a cesarean, can often be challenging but it’s oh-so worth it! 

John 16:21

When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.

5. Pregnancy Creates A Lifelong Bond

It takes 40 weeks to develop a baby inside your womb. Whether you know it or not, you will forever have a bond with the life that you carried and bore. Babies learn the voice of their mother from within the womb, that’s incredible!

Thereโ€™s a reason why it is recommended that newborn babies have immediate, uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact with their mother. It helps to solidify that bond between mother and child.

One thing that I absolutely loved doing with each of my babies was holding them in a baby carrier as much as possible. I didn’t do this to spoil them, I did it because it continues that natural bond and provides comfort to both the baby and the mother.

All in all, thereโ€™s just that beautiful โ€œglowโ€ that canโ€™t be ignored or denied when a woman is pregnant. It radiates from within and I truly believe that itโ€™s because there is something extraordinary about a mother carrying life inside her womb.

Think about it, we carry two heartbeats, two brains, and two souls. And if you’re pregnant with multiples you carry even more!

What an amazing truth found in Scripture! There is a beautiful, miraculous thing about the birth of a child. Even when you look in the mirror and see those extra 30 pounds of baby weight staring right back at you, donโ€™t let it fool you, youโ€™re still beautiful. You’re taking part in the beauty of pregnancy and bringing another image-bearer of God into this world!

Iโ€™m here to tell you that there is beauty in pregnancy and I’m here to shout it from the mountaintops! There is no amount of darkness that can overshadow the fact that life begins at conception and that children are a blessing and a gift from God.

The beauty of pregnancy is a true blessing.

This is great! I remember mothers always saying you have a pregnancy glow, you look amazing and thinking you’re so sweet to try and make me feel better. Now I look at pictures at 38 weeks, 2 months post birth and today at 18 months. There is a huge difference. I believe strongly in the glow and yes the amazing moments of bonding and protection we provide that next time I’ll appreciate more. Thank you for sharing!!! โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ

I could not agree more! I loved being pregnant, and I think pregnant women are beautiful. I have a friend that is insanely good looking, who refused to post any pictures of herself of Facebook while she was pregnant. My favorite part about being pregnant, is that you don’t have to worry about being skinny. If you are pregnant, you are NOT fat, you are growing a human inside your body, and that is magical!

I lived in Florida for both of my pregnancies so I think my “glow” was really sweat. Being pregnant is no joke, and being pregnant in the heat of the Florida summer is one of the least funny things I have experienced. But thank you for your insight (and the scripture!) because I think back on that time now and I’m just grateful that my body was able to do the work. Blessings to your family!

I wish I could have felt this way while pregnant. I was ill the entire time and horribly uncomfortable, with my large baby and tiny body. Definitely no glow.

This is a great reminder. That last trimester can be hard with the swollen feet and other discomforts.

These are great reminders! It’s been seven years since my youngest was born, and I can’t say that I felt beautiful. But I agree that pregnancy is a beautiful thing to be celebrated!

I think it is easier for us to see how others are beautiful, than to see it in ourselves. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t there. ๐Ÿ™‚
