We received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

With so many new families taking the homeschool route this year, many of those same families are looking for an online option to fit the needs of their curriculum. Reading Eggs, an award winning program, offers online learning, games and activities with Reading Eggs and Mathseeds.

What Is Reading Eggs and Mathseeds?

Reading Eggs

Reading Eggs is an online program that makes learning to read fun and engaging for children 2-13 . The program offers reading games, activities as well as a math program called Mathseeds for ages 3-9. According to their website, “The program is carefully designed to engage children, build skills fast, and nurture a love of reading from an early age.”

Before starting with Reading Eggs and Mathseeds, children take a placement test that will put them in the appropriate level for each program. Once they begin, rewards are earned as levels are progressed. When students have earned enough eggs or acorn rewards, they can use what they’ve earned to purchase things in the virtual store or use it to play extra games.

Individual avatars can also be customized by the children to make it more personal and fun.

Overall, Reading Eggs and Mathseeds provides:

  • Personalized lessons
  • Detailed reports to keep track of progress
  • Comprehensive lessons to help a non-reader become a chapter book reader

Reading Eggs As A Full Online Homeschool Curriculum

I was surprised to see that Reading Eggs had the option to be used as a full online homeschool curriculum. It provides 36 weeks of learning and covers language arts, math, science, and social studies. It includes lesson plans, assessments, worksheets, certificates, a library of ebooks, and detailed progress reports.

I took a look at the sequences and it is definitely a viable option for parents who need and are looking for an online curriculum for Kindergarten through Second Grade. You can download a free homeschool program guide to view the sequences to see if the program would be a good fit for your homeschool curriculum.reading eggs homeschool

How We Used Reading Eggs and Mathseeds

We used the program for all three children 2-3 days a week. My Second Grader used it on the desktop and my Kindergartener and Preschooler used the program on an iPad.

In the beginning, we had a lot of frustrating hiccups. We have an older 2012 iPad and had tech issues getting the app to work properly. After contacting support (who responded very quickly!), they were able to help us troubleshoot and fix the problem, however we still found the app to be very glitchy.

As for the desktop application, it works much better than the iPad app but we still had some tech issues with things not loading occasionally.

With my Second Grader, I found that the placement test wasn’t accurate. When she started the lessons, they were much too easy for her and I had to manually adjust the level up quite a bit to meet her needs. Once she was at the proper level, she enjoyed Reading Express and Mathseeds the most.

With my Kindergartener, his placement test was more accurate. It was interesting to see that he could complete most of the activities independently or with minimal help. He thinks the Ant character is belly gut hilarious!

With my Preschooler, I didn’t have her take the placement test and just started her from the beginning. She did try Reading Eggs Jr., however, it was too easy for her so we jumped right in to Reading Eggs and it was a much better fit. She did need more guidance with completing the activities, but I’m finding the more she does it, the more she “gets it”. She also gets a kick out of the characters.

My Thoughts On Reading Eggs

I’m not a big fan of Reading Eggs, unfortunately. I’ve tried much better and less glitchy programs. However, for the low cost and it providing a full online homeschool curriculum for up to 4 children on one subscription, it could be a great option for many homeschool families.

One thing I DO really like, is that Reading Eggs also provides free worksheets that can be downloaded for extra learning offline. I plan to download several sets for each of the kids and make a workbook that they can use for downtime or take over grandparents house.

Overall, I recommend Reading Eggs to families who may be just starting with homeschooling to give them time to find and research a curriculum that they may prefer more.

I definitely recommend signing up for the free 30-day trial to see if it’s a good fit but for the money, it’s a great option to start with if you’re looking for an online curriculum.
