The idea of learning through play has become a cornerstone of effective teaching techniques. The same is true when it comes to teaching math. Integrating play into teaching math is a great way to boost a child’s natural curiosity and creativity which can help make math engaging and fun.

What is We Play Math?
We Play Math is a spiral based math curriculum for Kindergarten – 3rd grade, that ensures conceptual mastery through a combination of multi-sensory learning techniques. They blend the importance of practice through pencil and paper as well as arcade-style math games.
This curriculum offers a variety of ways to learn math including:
- Offline Games: printable enrichment activities
- Online Math Arcade: drill arithmetic facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
- Live Learning labs: an optional drop-in tutoring session at a set time each week.
- Math Labs: where students experiment, explore patterns, ask questions, collaborate and explore ideas with puzzles, visuals, multi-sensory tools, stories and visuals.
- Math Mysteries: students will explore the lives, inventions, contributions, discoveries and achievements of many of the world’s greatest mathematicians from Archimedes to Zeno using videos, lectures, stories and multi-sensory projects.
- Private Tutoring: when students need more personalized, individualized help, a highly trained, background checked tutor offers students tutoring in an E-classroom.
Each course lesson is approximately 30 minutes and is comprised of:
- Lesson Video is a brief (2-10 minutes) animated video explaining a concept
- Skills Game is an online, interactive game, about 5 minutes
- Written Practice (you may purchase a pre-printed workbook or print your own — you will receive the pdf file)
- Enrichment Activities each day include print-and-play games, hands-on activities, DIY math manipulatives, arts, crafts and math conversations.
The parent portal allows you to keep track of each child’s progress and also provides additional tools and resources.
How I Used We Play Math
Before starting the curriculum, a placement test must be taken so that you know which level to start at. The assessment was pretty straight forward. I printed out the test and let my son complete it at his own pace. Once he was finished, I graded it and placed him in the proper level.
Once he was placed, he moved right into the first lesson. Lessons do indeed take about 30 minutes to complete. Lessons are engaging and at times entertaining as he got a kick out of some of the jokes in the videos.
After the video, the skills games and written practice continued to be engaging.
And lastly, the arcade style games are saved for the end.
Overall, the lessons are engaging and enjoyable. His favorite is getting to play the arcade games at the end of each lesson.
How Much Is We Play Math?
This curriculum is decently priced. They offer a single membership for $20 per month or $197 per year or a family membership for $35 per month or $347 per year.
My Thoughts On We Play Math
The concept of this curriculum is great and I think it’s perfect for young learners, especially K-1. I like how engaging the lessons are. My son would look forward to playing the arcade style games at the end. As of right now, I won’t be using this as our primary math curriculum, but rather an add on for fun play and math games as it’s easy to do on a tablet.
I think We Play Math could be a great fit for homeschool families who are looking for a multi-sensory learning or gameschooling option. It can be used as a primary math curriculum and is a great price point.
