Earth Day Alternatives for Christian Families

Every year, Earth Day prompts millions of people to reflect on caring for our planet. But as Christian families, we’re called to look at creation care through a different lens—not one rooted in fear or worship of the earth itself, but in love and obedience to the God, Creator of the earth.

While many Earth Day events center on environmentalism apart from God, we can use this time as a teaching opportunity. Let’s shift our focus from celebrating the earth to honoring the One who made it.

Earth Day Alternatives for Christian Families

Here are some Earth Day alternatives that are Christ-centered and align with a biblical worldview:

Celebrate the Creator, Not the Creation

Instead of joining secular Earth Day celebrations that may blur the line between stewardship and earth-worship, set aside time to study what Scripture says about God’s creation. Read Genesis 1–2 as a family. Talk about how everything God made was “very good” and reflects His glory.

Family Activity:
Take a nature walk with your kids and marvel at God’s handiwork. Bring along Psalm 104 or Romans 1:20 to read aloud. Encourage your children to point out evidence of God’s creativity, order, and design.

Teach Biblical Stewardship

We are not owners of the earth—we are stewards. God entrusted Adam and Eve to “work it and keep it” (Genesis 2:15), and that same responsibility belongs to us. Biblical stewardship isn’t about worshiping nature, but managing it wisely for God’s glory.

Family Activity:
Start a small garden or plant something together. Talk about how we care for God’s creation in practical ways. Explain how even small acts of stewardship—like reducing waste or recycling—can be ways to honor God when done with the right heart.

Serve Others, Not Just the Environment

True stewardship includes caring for people. Instead of focusing only on conservation, consider ways to bless others with creation in mind.

Family Activity:
Organize a local clean-up project with your church or homeschool group—not as a virtue signal, but as an act of service to your community and gratitude to God. While serving, talk with your kids about how Jesus came not to be served, but to serve (Mark 10:45).

Use Creation to Point to Christ

The beauty and complexity of creation testify to God’s existence and power. Use Earth Day as a gospel opportunity.

Family Activity:
Make a Creation-themed craft or nature journal with your kids. Label each day of creation with Scripture and illustrations. Talk about how the fall affected creation (Romans 8:20–22), but also how Jesus is making all things new (Revelation 21:5).

Worship the Maker with Gratitude

Creation leads us to worship the Creator. Earth Day is a great time to cultivate a spirit of thanksgiving for God’s provision, from the air we breathe to the food we eat.

Family Activity:
Have a “Creation Celebration” meal. Use this time to pray together, thanking God for specific aspects of His creation. Play worship music that praises the Lord for His majesty in nature (like “All Creatures of Our God and King” by Sovereign Grace Music or a classic hymn like “This Is My Father’s World” remade in this version by The Getty’s).

A Day for Discipleship

As Christians, every day—not just April 22—is an opportunity to honor God through how we treat His creation. Instead of separating creation care from the gospel, let’s anchor it in the truth that “the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof” (Psalm 24:1). When we teach our children to see the world this way, Earth Day becomes not a celebration of nature itself, but of the One who made it all.
